Suzan Hewat for Mayor of Kaslo
I grew up in Nakusp and have lived in Kaslo for the past 35 years. I feel that I know the community inside out. I have served on numerous community boards and committees, often serving as chairperson or treasurer, including the Kaslo & District Community Forest Society, Kaslo Jazz Etc Society, Kaslo Curling Club, Community Consultative Group, Kaslo Minor Hockey, Kaslo Ducks Unlimited Committee, JV Humphries Parent Advisory Council (PAC), Victorian Hospital Auxiliary, 1st Kaslo Scouting Group, the Chamber of Commerce, and Kaslo Daycare Society.
As a councillor since 2005, I feel I have demonstrated my commitment to personal integrity and collaboration. I am known as an individual willing to listen to alternative perspectives and accept differences of opinion. I understand local government protocols and processes, and can be counted on to respect the often challenging issue of conflict of interest and confidentiality required in a small town.
While a member of Village Council, I have worked hard on several committees including chairing the Budget Committee for the past six years. I am intimately aware of the Village of Kaslo’s financial capacity and can read and understand the implications of a financial statement.
I am hard working and have a consistent attendance record in all of my council and committee work. I embrace new & emerging technologies.
I can be counted on to take a thoughtful and pragmatic approach when it comes to the future of Kaslo.
As Mayor I will work with Council to:
- Support the long term sustainability of existing assets and infrastructure and create reserves for their eventual repair & replacement.
- Pursue completion of the liquid waste management plan
- Work on a comprehensive waterfront development plan
- Use new infrastructure like the high speed broadband capacity to expand the local economy
I have a proven ability to work with the wide diversity of citizens and interests represented in the Village. I am not aligned with a specific interest group nor do I have a pet project to promote. I am ready to take advantage of new opportunities such as the new broadband capacity being developed in the Village. I will work with the Kaslo & Area D Health Working Group and Interior Health to encourage alternative health care delivery that could include nurse practitioners and an improved system with BC Ambulance.
I look forward to the opportunity of working with whoever else is elected to council, listening to their ideas and helping implement those that we feel are beneficial to Kaslo as a whole.
A vote for Suzan is a vote for competent, thoughtful, even-tempered and trusted leadership.
